Benefits for students

The program provides guidance and funding for Victorian government schools to run activities and initiatives that:

  • foster a greater understanding and connection to students' own community and to the community of their peers from the Indian diaspora
  • encourage critical reflection on how community institutions and intercultural experiences influence attitudes, values and beliefs
  • provide exposure to tangible illustrations of global interconnectedness and opportunities to explore Indian culture, histories and stories directly from those in Victoria’s Indian community
  • enhance awareness of the role culture plays in identity, and in fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion in society.

  • build stronger community connection and pride
  • improve wellbeing and educational outcomes for students by supporting individuals and communities in connecting with their cultural backgrounds, contributing to students’ personal growth and self-efficacy

CSIC participating schools and projects 2025

Barton Primary School

A traditional Indian dance program and a visit to a local Sikh temple for Year 4 students.

Beveridge Primary School

Indian art and dance lessons for students, video production involving the local Indian community, and a Diwali celebration to showcase program outcomes.

Gaayip-Yagila Primary School

A Bollywood dance incursion for the whole school, along with the purchase of dual language resources, in preparation for a school-wide Diwali celebration at the Art Show.

Keysborough Secondary College

A parent and community engagement group called, ‘Chai and Chat’ with guest speakers; a whole school yoga day, and a school and community Diwali event.

Mitchell Shire Schools cluster 1

A variety of activities, including Indian dance and music performances as well as excursions to Australian Indian Community centres, Hindu temples and Punjabi Gurudwaras, with a focus on South India for the four cluster schools.

The schools included in this cluster are: Kilmore Primary School, Willowmavin Primary School, Wandong Primary School and Seymour College.

Mitchell Shire Schools cluster 2

For the four cluster schools, activities include trips to Australian Indian community centres, Hindu temples, and Punjabi Gurudwaras, as well as Indian dance and music performances, all focusing on North India.

The schools included in this cluster are: Kilmore Primary School, Upper Plenty Primary School, Broadford Primary School, Broadford Secondary College and Puckapunyal Primary School.

Mount Clear College cluster

Yoga lessons, dance and language classes, art classes and art club, participation in the Diwali celebration participation and local community events, an India Day at the college, involvement in the homework club, and video production showcasing these activities.

The schools included in this cluster are: Mount Clear College, Buninyong Primary School, Mount Clear Primary School.

Pakenham Secondary College

A program for Years 11 and 12 VCE Business Management students, including workshops with local Indian community members, whole-school cooking workshops, cultural incursions, and staff professional development.

Quarters Primary School

A multifaceted program including translation and language materials, cultural performances and festival celebrations, the development of a recipe book, support for a community food drive, and creation of a mural.

Wulerrp Secondary College

Year 7 dance classes that include a community performance and visits to local primary schools.
