A flexible transport network
Travel by tram, train, bus, car, bike or on foot. You'll get a different feel for the city depending on your choice.
Our schools have good public transport links and are within easy travelling distance of the city. Universities have campuses in the city centre and suburbs if you're exploring your tertiary study options.
One ticket for all public transport - myki
Melbourne's metropolitan transport system extends in all directions and makes it easy to move between trains, trams and buses.
You will need to purchase a 'myki' card to travel in Victoria.
This plastic smart card enables you to travel on buses, trains and tram services. You can top up your 'myki' card with money or credit card at most newsagents, convenience stores and online via the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) app.
Victoria’s transport network provides a continuous service between metropolitan and regional zones.
Child myki
You can purchase a Child myki if you are aged between 5 and 18 years (under 19) and pay a concession fare.
This applies to anyone aged 18 years and under, including international students and tourists. For more information, see Child myki. Your International Student Coordinator will also be able to assist you with this on arrival.
Travelling by tram
Melbourne's trams are part of the city's unique character. They're a great way to explore the CBD and inner suburbs. We have the largest tram network in the world, with over 480 trams and 23 different routes. They travel along most of the city's major roads and extend out into the suburbs.
Heritage trams run on the free City Circle route, especially for visitors to Melbourne. An audio commentary on the City Circle tram offers insights into key Melbourne landmarks like the Melbourne Museum, Flinders Street Station, and Federation Square, among others. Tourists can utilise this tram service all day as a convenient 'hop on - hop off' option to explore attractions such as the SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium and the Princess Theatre, while also enjoying a classic Melbourne transportation experience. Information leaflets and an easy-to-understand city map are available on board to enhance the visit.

Travelling by trains
Melbourne and its suburbs are well-connected by trains. The city centre has a train system called the "City Loop" that is partly underground. There are five stations in Melbourne’s city centre: Flinders Street, Parliament, Melbourne Central, Flagstaff and Southern Cross - making it easy to get to different parts of the city.
Southern Cross Station is the public transport hub of Melbourne and Victoria, serving over 1.2 million people per week. This is the modern arrival point for interstate, regional and suburban visitors.
There are 17 different train lines to Melbourne’s suburbs. Trains run from around 5 am until midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights, trains and some trams operate throughout the night.
The V/Line is Victoria's state-wide rail network connecting to cities and towns across Victoria and also to the other Australian states. Many of the popular Victorian tourist destinations can also be reached on V/line. You can use your myki to travel on V/Line. For a map of the metropolitan and regional train network, see: Public Transport Victoria.
Travelling by bus
Our buses connect regularly to key locations in your local community, such as shopping centres, schools, hospitals, leisure and sports facilities, and major attractions. You can easily plan your trips across Melbourne and Victoria as bus routes link with train and tram services.
