For example, the dependant children of tertiary international students who are studying a diploma, undergraduate or postgraduate degree at a Victorian university, Vocational Education and Training (VET) or Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institution.
Please apply for the Dependant Application for your child if you as a parent or guardian hold or are applying for visa subclasses:
- Student visa (subclass 500) higher education
- Student visa (subclass 500) vocational education and training (VET)
- Student visa (subclass 500) ELICOS
- Student visa (subclass 500) non-award
Children of parents who are studying at a Victorian university for research purposes are fee-exempt and can apply directly to individual schools (i.e. students who hold or are applying for a student visa (subclass 500) postgraduate research or student visa (subclass 500) AusAID and Defence.

Entry requirements
Age requirements
All school students must be of an appropriate age for the entry level for their school course, regardless of their country of citizenship. To be granted a visa for school studies, the student must meet the following Migration Regulations 1994. Dependant application students must be 5 years of age by 30 April in the year of entry into Preparatory (Prep) grade.
English language requirements
Our schools assess students' English proficiency level when they arrive. Depending on their proficiency level, students will either stay in mainstream classes or the school will arrange for them to attend intensive English language classes so they can thrive in the mainstream classroom environment. Intensive English language classes at government schools do not require additional tuition fees.
Academic requirements
Dependant students are not required to provide academic evidence for entry.
