Entry requirements

Age requirements

All school students must be of an appropriate age for the entry level for their school course, regardless of their country of citizenship. To be granted a visa for primary school studies, the student must meet the below Migration Regulations 1994:

  • At least 6 years of age: At the time of visa application

Primary school year levels and ages

Preparatory (Prep) and Grades 1 to 6 (with a total duration of up to 7 years) form primary school classes in Victorian government schools.

  • Prep: at least 6 years of age at time of visa application
  • Grade 1: 6 - 7 years of age
  • Grade 2: 7 - 8 years of age
  • Grade 3: 8 - 9 years of age
  • Grade 4: 9 - 10 years of age
  • Grade 5: 10 - 11 years of age
  • Grade 6: 11 - 12 years of age

English language requirements

The school will assess your English proficiency level when you arrive, depending on your proficiency level, you will either stay in mainstream classes or the school will arrange you to attend private English lessons to make sure you thrive in the mainstream classroom environment.

English language entry requirements or needing to study an intensive English language program is not required for primary school students.

Welfare and accommodation options

Accommodation options that are available for primary school international students include:

  1. Live with a parent or legal guardian
  2. Live with a Department of Home Affairs (DHA) approved relative
