- Karson - Bendigo Senior Secondary College Alumnus

When Kaibin (Karson) first stepped off the bus in Bendigo as a high school student, he was welcomed by his host family who quickly made him feel at home. Their kindness gave him a strong sense of belonging from day one — and years later, they are still part of his life, a reminder of the lasting bonds that Bendigo fosters.

After completing Year 12 locally, Karson began a Bachelor of Information Technology at Monash University in Melbourne. However, his love for Bendigo saw him return in his second year. He transferred to La Trobe University’s Bendigo campus, choosing to continue his studies in the city. For him, the chance to be immersed in an English-speaking environment every day wasn’t just about learning a language, it was about gaining the confidence and skills to step into a global IT career.

Karson's university experience allowed him to secure work placements with Bendigo Health and the local council, where he saw his classroom learning come alive in projects that delivered real impact for the community. These experiences strengthened his professional confidence and showed him the unique advantage of studying in a regional city, authentic, hands-on opportunities that prepare students for life after graduation.

Once graduated, Karson ventured back to China, working in Shanghai from 2020 to 2022. In 2023, he returned to the city of Bendigo, drawn back by both career opportunities and the supportive community that had shaped his journey. Today, he works as a Senior IT Specialist at Bendigo Health, contributing to the very place where his professional story began.

Outside of study and work, Karson embraced life in Bendigo through sport, friendships, and the strong support networks that helped him grow resilience and direction. These experiences built the foundation for his success, not only academically, but personally.

Now, Karson has come full circle. He mentors new international students and even hosts them in his home, offering the same encouragement and belonging he once received. His story is proof of how Bendigo’s welcoming community, practical opportunities, and immersive environment can transform an international student’s experience into a lifelong connection and a pathway to a global career.
