You were not made to be anyone but exactly who you are. Be that unique version of yourself!
- Minh - Wodonga Senior Secondary College Alumnus
Q: Can you tell us about your early life in Vietnam and what sparked your interest in studying overseas?
A: I grew up in Hanoi, Vietnam, surrounded by family and friends, and I always had a strong passion for learning English. My parents were really supportive and encouraged me to take extra language classes outside of school. That balance between regular schooling and additional language studies helped me build confidence, especially in communicating with others. Over time, this sparked my interest in studying overseas and exploring opportunities beyond Vietnam.
Q: How were you first introduced to Wodonga, and what led you to return as an international student?
A: My first experience with Wodonga was in 2017 during a summer exchange program. I spent time camping in the Victorian High Country and exploring the Albury-Wodonga region. The environment was so fresh, the community was incredibly welcoming, and the facilities were excellent. That experience left a lasting impression on me. Two years later, in 2019, I decided to return, this time as an international student.
Q: What was your experience like studying at Wodonga Senior Secondary College (WSSC)?
A: I enrolled at WSSC in July 2019 and completed the second half of Year 9 at Wodonga Middle Years College, then continued through to Year 12 at Wodonga Senior Secondary College, graduating in 2022. My experience there was outstanding. The school offered a diverse range of subjects and had very supportive, approachable teachers. They also provided access to university excursions and expos, which really helped me understand my options and feel confident about life after school. I chose a mix of VCE subjects that matched both my interests and career goals including English, Specialist Maths, Mathematical Methods, Accounting, VET Hospitality, and Vietnamese as a first language.
Q: What was life like for you outside of school while living in Albury-Wodonga?
A: I really enjoyed the pace of life in Albury-Wodonga. It was perfect for focusing on my studies, but still close enough to Melbourne for city visits. Thanks to the convenient VLine train connections, I could easily travel between the two. My host family played a huge role in my experience. They welcomed me into their lives and truly made me feel like part of the family. They supported me in many ways, from driving me to work and taking me on day trips to organising road trips during school breaks. Their support, especially during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was invaluable. Living with them for 3.5 years made a big difference, and thanks to that support, I even felt confident enough to take on leadership roles, including becoming College Captain in Year 12.
Q: What are you doing now, and how have your goals evolved since leaving school?
A: I’m currently in my penultimate year at RMIT University in Melbourne, studying a Bachelor of Business (Professional Practice) with a major in Finance. I recently completed an internship at an IT company, which led to a part-time role as a sales consultant and sales development representative. Initially, I had imagined a future in investment banking, but the internship really shifted my perspective. I’ve developed a strong interest in sales, innovation, and technology. So while I’m continuing my finance major, I’ve also chosen electives in information systems and business technologies. I’m now exploring areas like AI and business innovation and it’s been a really exciting pivot.
Q: Looking back, what do you think had the biggest impact on your journey?
A: Looking back, I truly credit my time at Wodonga Senior Secondary College, my teachers, and my host family for shaping the path I’m on today. The support, encouragement, and opportunities I received in regional Victoria gave me the confidence and skills I needed to grow. Those experiences helped build the foundation for everything I’m doing now, and they continue to guide me as I move forward.
